LOS ANGELES (CBS) – A Los Angeles wedding photographer has been sentenced to 510 days in jail for stealing from scores of local newlyweds.
CBS2 Investigative Reporter David Goldstein first reported on wedding photographer Alan Brent Carruth in 2007. Carruth was being sued by dozens of couples who paid thousands of dollars, but had waited years to receive their wedding photos.
The LA Times reports more than 40 victims paid Carruth nearly $125,000 for wedding photos he never delivered.
In June of this year, Carruth pleaded no contest to 8 misdemeanor counts of grand theft. His sentencing, originally scheduled for Aug. 25, was postponed after he claimed medical problems.
Thursday, Superior Court Judge William C. Ryan ordered the photographer to jail and commanded him to turn over all photographs and pay full restitution to his victims, many of whom had been waiting for their photos since as early as 2003.
According to The LA Times, Carruth was also ordered to reimburse Los Angeles County nearly $20,000 in investigative costs.
In August, Carruth, who operated under the business name Alan Brent photography, was confronted in court by several of his victims. Some victims said their parents died without ever seeing their children’s wedding photos.
Carruth told Goldstein afterward he “felt horrible” for his victims.
